I pull and pinch at the rind
with fleshy fingertips
until it drops in crumbs
onto a blue plate.
Sliding a finger under the small edge
lifts larger pieces
and reveals the pithy sphere inside,
white and webby.
The segment resists
not wanting to be torn from the whole.
In my mouth the wedge is too large.
When I bite on it
juice spurts to the back
of my throat
catching
my
breath
with it’s acidic drops.
For a moment
the sweet extract
is gorgeous and I suck and drink
until I am left with
the stringy pouch of fibre
to chew on and swallow
before I pluck
another slice of the prize.
